A useful India packing list starts with your itinerary. A coastal stay, city visits and a mountain route can need very different clothing. Choose for the places and dates you will visit, then leave space for the experiences that matter to you.
The checklist below is a planning starting point. It is not a claim that one bag or wardrobe suits every region, season or traveller.
Map the route before choosing clothes
Write down each stop, travel date and planned activity. Check the forecast near departure and ask accommodation or activity providers about the conditions relevant to your booking. If your route crosses different climates, allow for that deliberately instead of filling the bag with speculative extras.
Count the days between realistic laundry opportunities. A longer trip does not always need a larger wardrobe if you can wash and dry clothes along the way.
A flexible clothing checklist
- Four or five tops that combine with the same bottoms.
- Two or three bottoms suited to your route and activities.
- A light layer, plus warmer clothing or rain protection where the forecast and itinerary require it.
- Clothing appropriate for the places of worship you intend to visit.
- Underwear and socks to reach the next laundry stop, with a spare set.
- Sleepwear and swimwear if your plans include the beach or pool.
- Walking footwear you have already checked for fit.
Incredible India’s official visitor FAQs recommend appropriate dress for religious places and explain that shoes are removed at certain places of worship. Check the requirements of the individual place you plan to visit; do not assume every site follows the same rules.
Keep travel documents accessible
Make a checklist of the identification, entry documents and booking information required for your own trip. Keep secure backups and a practical way to find arrival and accommodation details when you need them. Confirm current entry requirements with the relevant authorities before departure.
A document organiser is optional, but can help keep papers together. Our zip-around travel wallet has sections for documents, cards and cash and measures approximately 25 × 13 × 2 cm. The image illustrates the organiser, rather than an Indian destination. Check that your documents fit before using it.
Toiletries and everyday essentials
Pack your usual personal-care basics, essential personal items, glasses or contact-lens supplies, and chargers for the devices you will use. Verify that your charging equipment suits the destination. Build the wash kit around what you need on arrival, rather than carrying a large spare bottle of everything.
For international departures from Australia, check the Australian Government’s guidance on liquids, aerosols, gels and powders, plus requirements for connecting airports. Choose toiletry storage around the kit you actually carry.
Organise for moving between stops
Separate clean clothes, worn laundry, cables and documents. Use what you already own before buying a matching set. If you need more compartments, compare our packing organisers and read whether packing cubes are worth it.
Measure and weigh the full bag, including last-minute chargers and toiletries. A bag described as travel luggage is not automatically accepted by every airline. Check each carrier and fare on the itinerary.
Save / Splurge / Worth it?
- Save: repeat outfits, plan laundry and skip accessories you will not use.
- Splurge: allow room in the spending plan for the accommodation, food or activities you care about.
- Worth it? compare a lighter packing plan with the cost and convenience of the baggage you actually need.
For coastal days, use our surf-trip packing checklist. Browse travel accessories only after identifying the gaps in your own kit.
