Travelling with carry-on luggage works best when you pack for the week you have planned, rather than every situation you can imagine. A smaller bag can simplify station changes, stairs and airport arrivals. It only saves money, though, when it fits the allowance included in your actual booking.
This carry-on packing list is a starting point for a week in mild weather, with one laundry stop. Adapt it for your climate, access needs and activities. There is no prize for leaving something essential behind.
Start with the bag allowance
Check the operating airline, fare and each flight in your itinerary. Record the permitted number of bags, packed dimensions and weight. A bag advertised as “cabin size” is not a promise that every airline will accept it. Include wheels, handles and bulging pockets when measuring.
Weigh the empty bag first. If your allowance is 7 kg and the bag weighs 2.5 kg, you have 4.5 kg left for its contents. That arithmetic is more useful than a list of clever packing gadgets.
A flexible one-week clothing list
- Four everyday tops that work with both bottoms.
- Two bottoms suited to the weather and planned activities.
- One light layer and one weather-appropriate outer layer.
- Enough underwear and socks to reach your planned laundry day, plus a spare set.
- Sleepwear and swimwear if you will use them.
- One comfortable pair of walking shoes, worn for the journey.
- A second light pair only when the itinerary calls for it.
Count the outfit you wear on departure as part of the wardrobe. Lay everything out and build actual combinations. An item that only works with one other piece has to justify its space. For colder trips, reconsider the bag allowance instead of assuming this mild-weather list will be enough.
Documents, technology and personal essentials
- Passport or required identification, booking information and any entry documents.
- Phone, charging cable, plug adaptor appropriate to the destination and only the electronics you will use.
- Essential medication and any supporting documents required for your route.
- Glasses, contact-lens supplies and other personal essentials.
- A small wash kit, toothbrush and the toiletries needed before you can restock.
- A separate bag for worn clothing.
Keep important documents and medication accessible. Check airline guidance for batteries, power banks and medical equipment rather than treating them like ordinary clothing.
Pack toiletries for the journey
For international departures from Australia, liquids, aerosols and gels generally need containers of 100 mL or 100 g or less, packed in a transparent resealable bag of the specified size. The container capacity matters, even if it is partly empty. Medical and other exemptions have their own requirements. Check the Australian Government’s current screening guidance and the rules for connecting airports before packing.
Use organisation to find things, not to add more
Separate clothes, toiletries and cables into a few lightweight pouches. Use what you already own first. Packing cubes can make repacking easier; compression changes volume, not weight. Leave enough room to close the bag without a struggle and to repack it during the trip.
If you need an organiser, browse our packing and organisation collection after measuring your bag. Buying a full set is unnecessary if one pouch solves the problem.
The final five-minute check
- Pack everything, including the items you will add on departure morning.
- Weigh each bag and check whether the allowance is combined.
- Measure the bag when fully packed.
- Lift it, walk with it and make sure you can manage it comfortably.
- Remove duplicate or speculative items before removing essentials.
Can you travel for two weeks with carry-on only?
Often the clothing list can stay similar if you can do laundry. Climate changes, specialist equipment and personal requirements matter more than the number of nights. Compare the cost and convenience of laundry with a checked bag; choose the option that suits the trip.
